On the first Thursday evening of every month, Johannesburg opens its streets to a lively fiasco of food and art. Walk between galleries, markets, bars and cultural attractions around the city, areas include Braamfontein, Newtown and Rosebank. Starting at your first gallery – grab a map and follow the attractions marked on the map. Its so much fun – especially for those who love the Joburg and even more so for those who aren’t from here. Here is your guide to First Thursday’s Jo’Burg.
WHAT TO DO…
Some of my favourite activities on First Evenings include drinking wine, chatting to friends and enjoying the delish food at the market! A great evening is always had.
The Neighbourgoods Night Market
Who doesn’t love the market – even better – who doesn’t love the market at night? The night market is such a treat, all your local favourites are out and about and you can enjoy a lovely dinner, snack or hey even a sneaky desert under the city lights.
The Stevenson is one of South Africa’s esteemed galleries showcasing many of South Africa’s contemporary artists. Defs put this gallery on your must go to list – its not to be missed.
A young gallery that’s gaining momentum in the South African art world, Kalashnikovv is constantly pushing boundaries and questioning what it means to produce art.
Ant. Establishment Bar
Need a cocktail or maybe a tequila – Ant. Est. is great to sit and people watch or just have a cigarette. There décor is also to be enjoyed.
Kitcheners Calvery Bar
Kitchener’s is a local favourite as it’s Johannesburg’s 2nd oldest bar and always having a party. Known for their indie tunes and free before 9.30pm – a little dance never hurt anyone.
